Info and operation

How do I set up my BRU Maker One before first use?

You got your BRU Maker One, what now? Here is how to get started:

1) When you open the box, the user manual is on top. First, read all the safety warnings and instructions in the user manual. You can also download the user manual here.

2) Carefully remove the BRU Maker one from its packaging. As we use recycled cardboard inserts to keep the machine in place, there might be some cardboard ‘dust’ on the machine. This is completely normal and the dust is easily removed with a slightly damp cloth.

3)
Check if the product is undamaged and if all contents are in the box.
• BRU Maker One Machine
• Power cord (with the right outlet for your home country)
• Water tank
• Water tank lid
• Tea sieve
• Tea sieve lid
• Glass brewing chamber: there is a smaller section of cardboard inserts wrapped with tape in the box. This contains the glass brewing chamber. Handle witch care. To open, put the cardboard insert on a flat surface and carefully cut open the tape.
• Silicone nozzle (already installed)
• Magnetic drip tray
• Drip tray plate
• Reset pin
• User manual
If any of these parts are damaged or missing, please contact customer services.

4) Remove the water tank and the water tank lid from the machine by sliding them upwards.

5) Rinse the water tank, water tank lid, tea sieve, tea sieve lid and glass brewing chamber with fresh water and let dry, or dry with a cloth.

6) Put the BRU Maker One on a flat and stable surface.

7) Carefully tilt your BRU Maker One until you can attach the power cord on the bottom. Arrange the power cord in the power cord storage at the length you like.

8) Check if the silicone nozzle is installed properly by gently pulling on it from the bottom part that sticks out of the machine. If it feels like it won’t move, you’re good to go.

9) Open the machine lid and put the glass brewing chamber, tea sieve and tea sieve lid in place. Close the lid.

10) Fill the water tank with clean water and slide it back in place. Put the lid back on. Make sure the top is aligned. If that is not the case, push the water tank and water tank lid further down.

11) Attach the magnetic drip tray (with the drip tray plate on it) and put a cup on it.

12) Plug the machine in an outlet.

13) We will now do an (optional) brewing cycle without tea, to do a last rinse of the machine before use:
• Wait when the ‘hello BRU’- screen appears until you get to the main menu screen.
• Turn the main button to the right until you get to the ‘dispenser’ screen.
• Press the left button to select SETUP (picture)
• Set the water temperature to ‘max’ by turning the main button to the right. Press NEXT.
• Set the water amount to 300 ml (make sure your cup can hold this amount) by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
• Press START.
• The machine will dispense hot water into the cup. Do not drink it.

14) Turn the main button to the left until you get back to the main menu. Your BRU Maker One is now ready to start brewing!

Quick brewing guide for the BRU Maker One

Once your BRU Maker One is installed, here is the easiest way to make a cup of tea:

1) Open the machine lid.

2) Remove the tea sieve from the machine.

3) Put any loose leaf tea or tea bag in the sieve. Close the tea sieve lid and put the sieve back in the machine making sure the tea sieve handles are in the grooves. When using a tea bag, make sure the strings hangs over the tea sieve handle so that the string and the label are hanging outside of the machine.

4) Close the machine lid.

5) Put a cup on the drip tray.
From here, you have different options to start brewing your tea, depending on the menu you choose. The easiest way is through the main menu, which we will explain in the next steps.

6) Go to the main menu (If your machine is in stand-by, just push any button to re-activate)

7) Look at the water temperature, steeping time and water amount settings in the main menu. If you are satisfied with your settings, press start or press the main button to start brewing. If you don’t know which settings to use, look on the package of your tea or use our recommended settings.

To adjust your settings, do the following:
- Press the left button to select SETUP.
- Set your water temperature by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
- Set your steeping time by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
- Set your water amount by turning the main button. Make sure you don’t select a bigger water amount than your cup can hold. Press NEXT.
- Press START or press the main button to start brewing.

8) The BRU Maker One will start brewing your tea. You will see the countdown on the display.

9) Wait until your machine makes a noise and your tea is served. Enjoy!

10) Be careful with opening the machine lid directly after brewing. There can be some hot steam and the tea sieve can be hot.

11) After making a cup of tea or before brewing a new one, take the tea sieve out, remove the loose leaf tea or tea bag and rinse with a bit of water, and a bit of dish soap if needed.

What functions does the BRU maker One have and how do I use them?

The BRU Maker One has a few function menus that can help you make your tea in different ways.
How can you access these menus?
The machine already starts in M1. Main menu. From there, turn the main button to the right to get to the different menus.

Before using each menu, make sure there is tea in the tea sieve (! Except when using M6. Dispenser of M9. Machine setup).

M1. Main menu
The main menu is the first thing you see when using the BRU Maker One. It is your fastest track to a cup of tea.
• If you want to start brewing with the settings that are displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• Of you want to adapt the settings:

o Press the left button to select SETUP.
o Set your water temperature by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Set your steeping time by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Set your water amount by turning the main button. Make sure you don’t select a bigger water amount than your cup can hold. Press NEXT.
o Press ‘start’ or press the main button to start brewing.

The settings you choose will be saved for your next cup of tea, so the main menu always displays the last chosen settings.

M2. Green tea preset
Our presets are there to provide you with a set of brewing settings to choose, depending on the type of tea you have.
So if you want to drink a green tea and don’t want to adjust the main menu settings, you can use the green tea preset to quickly brew with a temperature, steeping time and water amount that make sense for a usual green tea.

When you get the machine, the green tea preset will be set as follows:
Water temperature: 80°C / 180 F
Steeping time: 2 min
Water amount: 250 ml / 8 oz

• If you want to start brewing with the settings that are displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• But you can also adapt the green tea preset settings to your liking, analog to adapting the main menu settings.

M3. Black tea preset
Works analog to the green tea preset.
When you get the machine, the black tea preset will be set as follows:
Water temperature: 95°C / 205 F
Steeping time: 5 min
Water amount: 250 ml / 8 oz

M4. Herbal tea preset
Works analog to the green tea preset.
When you get the machine, the herbal tea preset will be set as follows:
Water temperature: 90°C / 200 F
Steeping time: 5 min
Water amount: 250 ml / 8 oz

M5. Multi steeping
With our machine you can make 400 ml / 12 oz of tea at a time, but what if you want to make more? The multi steeping function is here to help you out! With the multi steeping function you can make up to 4 consecutive brews at a time, adding up to 1600 ml/ 48 oz. The number on the display indicates how many steep cycles will be done, with the settings from the main menu.
So for example, if your main menu settings are 90°C / 200 F, 5 min and 250 ml / 8 oz, and you select multi-steep 4, you will make 4x the amount of the main menu, so 1 litre / 32 oz of tea at 90°C / 200 F, steeped in 5 min.
NOTE: when using multi-steep, make sure to put enough tea in the sieve and to put a big enough container under the nozzle outlet.

• If you want to start brewing multi-steep with the amount of steep cycles that is displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• Of you want to adapt the settings:

o Press the left button to select NEXT.
o Set your amount of steep cycles to 2,3 or 4 by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Press START or press the main button to start brewing.

M6. Dispenser
Did you know that you can also use your BRU Maker One as a (hot) water dispenser? Just choose the water amount and temperature, and it will be dispensed into your cup.
NOTE: when using the dispenser, make sure that your tea sieve is clean or that you take it out of the machine.

• If you want to start dispensing water with the settings displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• Of you want to adapt the settings:

o Press the left button to select SETUP.
o Set your water temperature by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Set your water amount by turning the main button. Press NEXT,
o Press START or press the main button to start dispensing.

M7. Timer
The timer is one of the most convenient functions of the BRU Maker One. It allows you to start brewing your cup of tea at a later time in the day. Simply fill the sieve with some tea and set the time for when you want the BRU Maker One to start brewing. For example, in the evening when you go to sleep you can set a timer at your wakeup time, let’s say 7.30 AM, to start the day out great with a cup of tea.
The display screen indicates at what time the tea will start brewing, with the settings from the main menu.
NOTE: the tea will start brewing at the indicated time, which means that from that moment the steeping process will start. So if you set your timer for example at 9 AM, and your tea will steep for 5 minutes, your tea will be ready at 9.05 AM.

How do you use the timer function?
First, make sure there is tea in the tea sieve and enough water in the tank.
Then, go to the timer menu.

• If you want to start brewing at the time displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• Of you want to adapt the settings:

o Press the left button to select SETUP.
o Set your hours by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Set your minutes by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Press ‘start’ or press the main button to put the machine in timer mode, it will then start brewing your tea at the time indicated on the display.

M8. Cool down
The cool-down function allows you to prepare your tea at a more ready-to-drink temperature. It does this by brewing the tea with a percentage of the water, then adding the rest of the water unheated.
The display screen indicates under ‘TEA’ what percentage of the water will be used to brew the tea, and under ‘WATER’, what percentage of unheated water will be added in the end. The brewing settings from the main menu will be used.
We recommend steeping for a little bit longer when using the cool-down function, as to not loose on taste.

• If you want to start brewing with cool-down percentages displayed on the screen, press the main button or the right button.
• Of you want to adapt the percentages:

o Press the left button to select SETUP.
o Adapt the percentages by turning the main button. Press NEXT.
o Press START or press the main button to start brewing.

What is the rinse function and how does it work?

The BRU Maker One has a rinse function, also referred to as the self-cleaning or auto-cleaning function.
With every cup of tea that you make, after it has been dispensed into your cup, the machine will send a little bit of water to the brewing chamber to rinse it. This means that no tea residue will build up in your brewing chamber, so that you don’t have to clean it after every cup of tea you make.

What happens with this water after?
You have two options (you can change this with the rinse setting):

Recommended option: you can dispense the rinse water to your cup. This means that after your tea is dispensed, the small amount of rinse water will be added to it shortly after. No worries, as this water will only been in the same places your tea has just been, it is all completely hygienic and safe. The amount of water is also that small that your tea will not taste cooled down.
• The second option is that the rinse will be dispensed to the drip tray. This means that after you take your cup away from the drip tray, the rinse water will be dispensed. This also means that after a few rinses you will have to empty your drip tray.
Lastly, you can also turn the rinse function off. Then you will have to clean the glass brewing chamber by hand or in the dish washer.
NOTE: even with the rinse function on, you will have to clean the glass brewing chamber regularly, we recommend once a week. You can find more information on cleaning the glass brewing chamber and other parts of the machine under the 'care'-section on this page.

Rinse intensity
The rinse function has also 3 different intensities, which you can change in your settings.
Normal rinse: this is the normal rinse intensity that works with most teas.
Intense rinse: If you feel like your glass brewing chamber does not get rinsed well enough, which can happen for example with very fine or heavy tea leaves like rooibos, you can choose the intense rinse. Your brewing chamber will be rinsed for a bit longer, with a bit more water.
Short rinse: if you want to minimize the rinse time or amount, you can go for a short rinse. For many teas this will work just fine.

Rinse delay time
The rinse delay time, which is another setting that determines at what point after your cup of tea is dispensed, your rinse will be performed. The number on the screen indicates how many seconds after brewing the rinse will be done. Usually the rinse delay is set to 0, which means it will happen immediately after.
The only reason to change the intensity is when you find that your glass brewing chamber is not completely clean after the rinse, even when the highest rinse intensity is selected. This happens usually when you are using a very fine tea, because then the serving of the tea might be slower, as finer tea might make it more difficult for water to drain from the tea sieve fast. This might result in the rinse already starting before the tea has completely been served, and as such its cleaning effect is nullified. This is where the rinse delay comes in. Set the rinse delay to a higher number than 0, and heighten this number until the glass brewing chamber is clean after the rinse.
If you have set the rinse delay to the maximum of 60 seconds, and the glass brewing chamber still has tea deposits in it after rinsing, there might be another root problem, please check our problem shooting help question for possible solutions.

Additional info about the rinse function
If you have not used the machine for longer than a week, we suggest you perform a rinse cycle before using it again. This can be easily done by pushing and holding the main button for longer than 3 seconds. It will then do a single rinse. Dispose of this rinse water, and then you can brew again!
