The importance of a sustainable mindset

Tea is, after water, the most popular drink in the world. According to the International Tea Committee, around 100 million cups are drunk every day in the UK alone, amounting to almost 36 billion cups per year. Yet the vast majority of tea drinkers around the world use electric kettles, which means that an astronomical number of kettles are used to make tea every day worldwide!

According to Chris Goodall, author of 'How to Live a Low Carbon Life', an electric kettle consumes over 4% (!) of a household's annual electricity consumption. This is because, on average, twice as much water is boiled as is actually used, resulting in a huge waste of energy, water, money and time. Especially when the water is boiled again half an hour later to make a second cup of tea. In the UK alone, around 3,500 tons of unnecessary CO2 are emitted every day.

Packaging waste, which is mainly caused by the environmentally harmful capsules in conventional tea machines, is also an environmental problem. According to EuroStat, the estimated packaging waste in the EU in 2018 amounted to an average of 174 kg per inhabitant (from 67.8 kg per inhabitant in Croatia to 227.5 kg per inhabitant in Germany).

We take a responsible approach to our packaging and wherever possible use materials that reduce our environmental impact and footprint. We try to source materials that can be recycled (for example cardboard), minimize the use of plastic and do not use polystyrene.
