Tea, tisane or infusion: that's what the names mean!

Whats in a name - tea, tisane or infusion

Tee

If you take it seriously when you call "tea", you quickly realize that a lot of what is often called tea is actually not a "real" tea at all. Tea in the traditional sense is the only drink that is made from the leaves of the tea plant Camellia Sinensis (see cover picture)! "Real" teas from Camellia Sinensis are: black tea, oolong, green tea, white tea, yellow tea, and pu-erh tea.

Infusion

Since the actual definition of "tea" is now clear: What about all the other "teas" you know & love? Since herbal and fruit teas are prepared in the same way as real tea and are so delicious & popular, these infusions were simply called "tea". From a technical point of view, "infusion" is the correct name for everything that is infused with hot or cold water with flavoring & ingredients. So both real teas such as black tea, green tea, etc. Under infusions, as well as mixtures of other leaves, fruits and herbs!

Tysane

Now what is a "tisane"? In short: infusions that contain NO real tea. This includes herbal teas, fruit teas, rooibos & mate.

Tisane, like herbal tea, also has a long history, dating back to ancient China and Egypt, where tisane was drunk for both enjoyment and medicinal purposes.

Ultimately, as with many other aspects of drinking tea, it depends on your personal preferences. The variety of how long you let it steep, how much tea you use, the water temperature to brew, whether you want to drink it cold or hot (and ultimately what you want to call it;)) is entirely up to you!

For us at BRU, the most important thing is that at the end you get the drink of your choice perfectly prepared in the way you want. So choose your favorite tea or infusion, put it in your BRU maker, sit back and enjoy!
